Mauro Vargas

Masculinities and Equity Consultant

Mauro has developed his professional career in the fields of research and teaching, collaborating for different academic institutions and civil society organizations.

He has specialized in the analysis of masculinities and is the author of several books and articles published in scientific, specialized and popular journals. He is a member of the Global MenEngage Network (Accomplices for Equality in the Mexico chapter).

In 2014 he received the “Simone de Beauvoir Recognition” for his contributions to innovation and democratic and gender humanistic transformation in Mexico, awarded by the Interdisciplinary Center for Women’s Studies (CIEM). In 2018 he was awarded globally by the Kering Foundation, for his innovative social entrepreneurship to move towards gender justice. Likewise, in 2019, he was selected as a member of Ashoka, a global network that promotes social entrepreneurship.

He currently serves as General Director of GENDES, A.C. (Gender and Development, Civil Association), an institution dedicated to the development of respectful, equitable and egalitarian gender relations from the construction of non-violent masculinities and from work with men.

He studied Sociology at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of the UNAM and a Master’s degree in Social Sciences (with a specialization in Studies on the United States of America) at the University of the Americas/Puebla. He was trained as a facilitator of re-education groups for male aggressors at CECEVIM (in San Francisco, California) and trained as a Psychotherapist at the Humanist Institute of Gestalt Psychotherapy in Mexico City.

He likes to walk every chance he gets and really enjoys good food. He’s passionate about reading, cinema and music. Always with a disposition for friendship accompanied by conversations that echo in those of society.
